Background of the Study

Human Resources (HR) outsourcing has become a prominent practice in many organizations across the globe, including Nigeria. It involves contracting third-party service providers to manage various HR functions such as recruitment, training, payroll, and employee benefits (Njeru & Kipng’etich, 2023). Outsourcing HR services is seen as a strategic decision to enhance operational efficiency, reduce costs, and allow the internal HR department to focus on core business functions (Murphy & Blanton, 2024). In the rapidly expanding e-commerce sector in Nigeria, companies like Jumia are increasingly outsourcing HR functions to streamline operations and remain competitive in the market.

Jumia Nigeria, being one of the largest e-commerce platforms in the country, faces significant challenges related to managing a diverse workforce across multiple regions, including Plateau State. As the company continues to grow, it needs to ensure that its HR functions are managed efficiently to support its business objectives, especially as the e-commerce industry becomes more competitive. By outsourcing HR functions, Jumia aims to leverage external expertise to manage employee-related tasks more efficiently and effectively. HR outsourcing is expected to provide benefits such as cost reduction, access to specialized expertise, improved employee services, and enhanced flexibility in responding to dynamic market conditions (Fagbemi, 2023).

The practice of outsourcing HR services is not without challenges, however. Concerns about the loss of control over employee management, potential issues with service providers, and cultural fit between outsourced providers and the organization are often cited as potential downsides (Adeniyi & Iyiola, 2024). Despite these challenges, Jumia Nigeria’s adoption of HR outsourcing is seen as a way to improve operational efficiency, reduce administrative burdens, and enhance its capacity to focus on strategic goals. This research aims to assess how HR outsourcing impacts Jumia’s operational efficiency, specifically in the context of Plateau State, where the company operates.

Statement of the Problem

While Jumia Nigeria has adopted HR outsourcing as a strategy to enhance operational efficiency, there is limited empirical research that explores the impact of this practice on the company’s overall performance, particularly in regions such as Plateau State. The problem lies in understanding the extent to which outsourcing HR functions has contributed to the company’s operational effectiveness, considering the unique challenges and dynamics of the e-commerce sector in Nigeria. While outsourcing offers potential benefits, such as cost savings and expertise, it also presents risks related to the alignment of external providers with the company’s goals and values. There is a need to evaluate how HR outsourcing at Jumia has affected key operational areas such as employee productivity, cost management, and overall organizational performance in Plateau State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on Jumia Nigeria’s HR outsourcing practices in Plateau State, specifically examining the impact on operational efficiency, employee performance, and productivity. The research will primarily gather data from employees and HR managers within Jumia’s Plateau State operations. Limitations of the study include potential biases in self-reported data, as employees and managers may have subjective views of the outsourcing process. Additionally, the findings may not be generalizable to other regions or companies outside of Jumia Nigeria.
